Dixie Curling Centre : Sparing Policy
Purpose:
This policy sets out some high-level guidelines for the use of spares. The existence of a sparing policy recognizes that appropriate use of spares is critical to the smooth functioning of all leagues in any curling organization.
Goal:
The goal is for the policy to be applied in a fair and consistent manner for all. The sparing guidelines below have been created in the belief members will allow for common sense to be applied in the spirit of good sportsmanship, fair play and in the interest of promoting an overall positive experience for Dixie Curling Centre members.
NOTE: Until further notice, Dixie will employ an ‘Open’ sparing policy, which allows any member in good standing with sparing privileges to spare in leagues other than those they are currently registered in with the following exception:
· Short league players do not have sparing privileges in full season leagues.
General Guidelines of Spare Recruitment for Dixie Curling Centre:
The general guidelines for the recruitment of spares should be as follows:
1. Spares should be sourced from within the league (including spare lists, registered 5th players and/or teams that have a bye) before searching outside the league.
2. A spare should be of similar capability/position to the person being replaced.
3. Fair play should be at the forefront of considerations when recruiting a spare.
League Guidelines:
Each league is responsible to develop written sparing rules that detail their league’s sparing restrictions so as to ensure fair play within the league consistent with the goals of the league. Such rules may include who can spare in what position during regular league play and during playoffs, etc.
Each league must submit their sparing rules to the Dixie Curling Centre Board of Directors prior to being implemented.
Concerns and Path of Resolution for use of Spares:
If there are any concerns regarding the use of spares within a league, those must be first brought up to the league convenor for resolution. Should the issue not be resolved at the convenor level, then the issue may be raised to the General Manager and/or Board of Director.
